Starlink on airlines: who has it, who's getting it — and whether your flight will

Starlink is rewriting in-flight Wi-Fi — streaming-class speeds, low latency, and a wave of airlines making it free. But "our airline signed with Starlink" and "your flight has Starlink" are very different claims: retrofits happen one aircraft at a time, over years. PlaneFi tracks the rollouts at subfleet level — and can check the exact plane on your flight.

Check a specific flight

Why Starlink is different in the air

Starlink's low-Earth-orbit satellites cut latency to ground-broadband levels and deliver speeds that hold up with every seat connected — gate to gate, over oceans. The flat-panel antenna installs in days, which is why airlines are retrofitting whole fleets at record pace. The catch: until a fleet is finished, Starlink-equipped and legacy aircraft fly side by side, often at different prices. For the full background on how in-flight Wi-Fi works, see our flight Wi-Fi guide.

Subfleet detail comes from PlaneFi's ongoing fleet research (the date on each airline shows when it was last checked). Aircraft-level confirmations appear on each airplane's page as rollouts land.

Starlink aircraft confirmed on PlaneFi

Rollouts land one tail at a time, and that's how we track them. These are the individual aircraft where PlaneFi has Starlink confirmed installed — this list grows as retrofits are verified:

481 aircraft and counting

An announcement is not your flight

A signed Starlink deal makes headlines years before the last aircraft is retrofitted. United's rollout runs into 2027; American's installs don't even start until 2027. In the meantime, the same route can be flown by a Starlink-equipped aircraft on Monday and a legacy-Wi-Fi aircraft on Tuesday. The only reliable answer is per aircraft: enter your flight number and date in the checker above, and PlaneFi resolves which physical plane you're on and what's installed on it.

Starlink flight Wi-Fi FAQ

Which airlines have Starlink Wi-Fi today?

Flying with passengers now: Hawaiian, Qatar Airways, airBaltic, JSX, and a growing share of United (regionals complete, mainline installing), Air France, Emirates, Alaska, British Airways, WestJet, SAS, ZIPAIR and Air New Zealand. Dozens more have signed, including the Lufthansa Group, American (Airbus narrowbodies), Southwest, Korean Air and IAG's airlines. The tracker above shows each rollout's actual state, subfleet by subfleet.

Is Starlink Wi-Fi free on planes?

Usually, yes — most airlines launch Starlink free, often behind a free loyalty-program login (United MileagePlus, SAS EuroBonus, WestJet Rewards). Qatar Airways and Hawaiian offer it free to everyone. The main exception so far is Emirates, which keeps paid tiers. And airlines mid-rollout typically still charge on their non-Starlink aircraft.

How fast is Starlink on a plane?

Fast enough that the experience stops feeling like "plane Wi-Fi" — streaming, video calls and cloud work behave like home broadband, with latency low enough for live gaming. Speeds vary with cabin load and coverage, but it comfortably outperforms the geostationary systems it replaces.

Does Starlink work over oceans and gate to gate?

Yes on both counts. The low-Earth-orbit constellation covers oceans and most polar routes, and because connections are allowed from boarding to deplaning, there's no waiting for 10,000 feet.

My airline "has Starlink" — why didn't my flight?

Because the airline is mid-retrofit and your aircraft hasn't had its turn. Equipment lives on individual planes, and airlines swap aircraft between routes daily. Check your specific flight in the tracker above, or look up the aircraft's tail number — each airplane's PlaneFi page shows what's actually installed.
